On June 22, 2010 between 10:55 am and 12:55 pm our two little robin chicks fledged! For the past two weeks we have been host to a little family of American Robins nesting underneath our deck in Yellowknife. We stopped all backyard activities so that we could give them room to hatch the eggs and raise the chicks up so they could leave the nest safely. Lucky for us, robins only stick around for a couple weeks after they hatch so we will get the use of our backyard deck over our short boreal summer after all. Otherwise, I shudder to think if we had flying elephants living under our deck with their 22 month gestation period.

Peep was the first to leave the nest at 10:55 AM. He actually flew immediately and had no troubles flying around with his father, Sir Chirps A-Lot. Cheep struggled to gain the courage to leave but eventually she jumped out during the lunch hour after a little prodding by Rosie and later by Sir Chirps. You can watch both fledgings here: Click here for PEEP | Click here for CHEEP.

For those of you who viewed our live Robins’ Nest Webcam Broadcast, thank you for sharing the experience with us! It was great meeting you. We chatted and emailed with people from around the world including Canada, the United States, Spain, England and Mexico (that we know of). For those participating in the chat you were likely chatting with Petra more than myself but I was always close by chasing off Ravens or maintaining the webcam with duct tape. And a special thanks to Alyssa Smith at Northern News Services for featuring a story about the Robin’s Nest live broadcast in the Yellowknifer Newspaper on June 11 and to Kyle at YKonline.ca for posting it on his community blog.

According to the Ustream.tv broadcast metrics we had somewhere between 7,000 and 9,000 unique people watch our robin chicks with us from the beginning to the end. Here are some of the photos from the past few days and a few of the chicks after they left the nest!

Thanks Sue! Both of us were happy to have met you and so many others while watching Rosie, Sir Chirps, Peep and Cheep. We never expected anyone would pay attention to our little robins’ nest cam in the beginning. Heck it even went international. What a great sharing experience!
