According to the calendar the first day of winter is actually December 21 this year. However, the calendar was not made in northern Canada. Thus, by northern standards, it is (officially) winter in Yellowknife as gloves, toques, scarf’s and winter jacket’s are becoming the fashionable norm once again. And it will not be long before we are pulling on our long underwear and zipping up our Canada Goose parkas. Temperatures this first half of October (2009) have been ranging from -1 degrees Celsius to -13 degrees Celsius. In years past, Yellowknife has reached the -30′s over the same time period. For those who do not know, Yellowknife does not get a huge amount of snow throughout the winter as compared to the more mountain areas (or less arid climates). That is because after reaching a certain point below zero it will not snow. And it gets very cold in Yellowknife. The coldest capital city on planet earth.
