The Royal Tour 2011: Prince William and Catherine visit Yellowknife

Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, visited Yellowknife today as part of their Royal Tour across Canada. Residents and dignitaries from around the Northwest Territories and beyond warmly welcomed the Duke and Duchess to the North. The weather today began with rain and cloudy skies but by the time the royal event was underway the sun was blazing away. Premier Roland even joked, during his welcome speech, that the NWT brought out some powerful people to make that happen.
The Royal event, one of several to be held in the Northwest Territories, was held at the Sombe K’e Civic Plaza next to City Hall. The event featured Drygeese and the Dettah drummers, speeches from local dignitaries (eg. Mayor Gordon van Tighem and Premier Floyd Roland), a demonstration of the Arctic sport of ‘high kick’ and a short hockey game where Prince William picked up a hockey stick tried scoring a goal several times; however, the goalie couldn’t be beat.
The British Royal Family has visited Canada and Yellowknife in the past. Prince William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, has visited Yellowknife, the Capital city of the Northwest Territories, three times — in 1959, 1970 and 1994. William’s father, Prince Charles, visited in 1979. William’s uncle, Prince Andrew, brought former Princess Sarah Ferguson in 1987. Check out Wikipedia’s full list of Royal Tours of Canada.

I was testing a new lens too. No stock requests for these ones yet. There were a lot of paparazzi from around the world there and a few recognizable photographers often featured in popular photo magazines too.
