(story and photos by Maxim Bloudov) – Well Yellowknifers, the Fishing Season is officially open. The Yellowknife River is fully open and flowing. I love to advantage of open water on the river. I always make sure I get up stream two times a week for some heavy duty Pike fishing action. This year is no different. I have been up the river 5 times since May 4th and let me tell you, fishing action is great.
Extreme cold water gives Pike extra stamina to fight prey, and fight they do. I also want to mention the size of these monsters in early spring. The pictures below were taken last Friday, May 7th, my buddy Bruce and went out for a couple of hours of fun, 12 and 15 lbs Pikes were on the menu. We hooked onto over 20 fish averaging 5-7 lbs.
Little known facts: Pike males rarely grow to sizes larger then 10lbs. All monsters of this species are females that could reach up to 58lbs in weight. My personal best is 36.60lbs LADY caught, you guessed it, at the Yellowknife River.
Fishing tips: Remember, the water is EXTREMELY cold right now, Pike are still in the “winter” mode, they are less active on cold water. This means, Pike are laying near bottom and not “cruising” around, patrolling their territories. Biggest trick at this time of the year is to get your lure as close to bottom as possible. If you get weeds on your hook every cast, that’s a good sign, means you’re doing everything right. If fish are not present, cast in a different hole or move your position 20 feet.
Lure Tips: Bruce caught his BIG PIKE on 5 Diamonds lure. I had luck with the Red Devil.
