Discovering Frame Lake in February
Posted on 23. Feb, 2008 by Shane in Sightseeing, Yellowknife
Clear skies and sub-arctic freezing winds will not stop my curiousity! It has been 44 days since we relocated to the icy capital of the Northwest Territories (aka. Yellowknife) and my obsession for discovering anything and everything arctic (and cold) has been motivating me to go outside yet again – despite it being -34 degrees celcius.
Looking out my front window I can see the frozen little Frame Lake, which is located right in the middle of Yellowknife. It is a beautiful site to see and appears to have several little islands poking up through the ice. During the winter Frame Lake serves as an important time-saving pedestrian and snowmobile transporation route to downtown Yellowknife. In the summer, one must travel around the lake, which takes much longer.
Anyway, today I decided was the day to take a hike across it and climb the highest hill to take a look around at my new 44-day-old sub-arctic home. After a challenging climb up through powdery chest height snow I discovered one of the best vantage points to view all of Yellowknife at the same time. Have a look below at my pictures to see for yourself.

Me, at the top, wearing my Canada Goose Parka – pretending that my face is not frozen.

Snowmobiling to Work! Only in the North.

I discovered endless Arctic beauty in the deep snow while climbing the hill.

There is even a Staples office depot, Wal-Mart, Extra Foods, Tim Hortons and a CO-OP foods up here!

Everything is buried in snow.

Did I mention the snowshoeing?
