The Aurora Borealis in Yellowknife came out in force on March 6, 2010. The northern sky lit up in multi-coloured ribbons and coiling rivers of light streaking towards the earth. On this occasion we went Aurora Viewing by Dog Team with Beck’s Kennels a local tour company specializing in Aurora tours, dogledding tours and dogsled racing. Have a look below. Click on the images to enlarge the photos.

Hi, I enjoy your photos very much. Thank you for sharing. Those pictures are fantastic.
I am planning to visit Yellowknife this October. Do you think I can see this amazing phenomenon of Aurora borealis during that time?

Hey Eileen, yes you can see it in October. As long as there are dark nights you can see the Aurora. It won’t be as cold as mid-winder; however, the clear skies at night are not as common.

Pictures are awesome! Can you see them around New Years Eve? I’m planning a trip to yellowknife at the end of 2010 begin of 2011. What would you recommend to do in the city during from Dec 30, 2010 to Jan 4th, 2011??

    Thanks a lot

Paulo, there should be plenty of Aurora Borealis for you to feast your eyes on pending any ICE FOG or Snow Falls.

January is one of the coldest of the coldest months so bring a very warm jacket, long underwear, gloves and a toque.

As for stuff to do, you could:

    a) rent a snowmobile
    b) ice fish
    c) drive to an ice road
    d) go on a dog sledding tour
    e) winter camp
    f) stay freakin’ warm
    g) have a brew at the Black Knight
    h) go dancing at the gold range
    e) go for Sunday brunch at the explorer hotel (awesome)

p.s. What are you coming up to the Knife for?

Just came by your blog while on a marketing research :p Have to commend you for this! Relived my childhood dream of actually seeing the borealis someday. Thanks!

    Greetings, excellent shots.
I just spent the last three days in Yellowknife and while working I had some time to visit most of the shops looking for posters or pictures of the lights. I even had Judith at the bookstore search for someone who might offer some JPEGs that could be made into posters or large photos. With such an enormous asset I’m surprised no on offers more than just a couple of postcards.
